What Dutch Research Universities Actually Look For
Dutch universities typically ask for a motivation letter answering a specific prompt — often "why this programme" rather than "why this university" — and generic answers that could apply to any Dutch institution are an immediate red flag to admissions committees.
Numerus fixus programmes (with capped intake, common in medicine, psychology, and some business courses) run a separate, more competitive selection process on top of standard eligibility — checking whether your target course is capped changes your entire application strategy.
Binding Study Advice (BSA) — a first-year credit threshold that can end your enrolment if unmet — means admissions committees are also implicitly assessing whether your academic background sets you up to hit that bar, not just whether you're eligible to start.
Academic English requirements are checked rigorously and independently of your general IELTS/TOEFL score for programmes with heavy reading loads — some departments set their own, higher internal thresholds.
